I am communication manager/public involvement team lead for the Washington Department of Ecology’s Nuclear Waste Program (NWP) in Richland (NWP’s public involvement team includes three others in our office.) I handle internal and external communications and serve as NWP’s lead media spokesperson. I’m also the point of contact for the Hanford Advisory Board, and support outreach and education events on Hanford issues.
I got officially involved in Hanford in April 2010, when I got an opportunity to jump from the sinking ship of daily newspapers, where I was an editor. But I have long found Hanford’s history to be one of the most compelling aspects of the site. I’ve enjoyed learning more about Hanford from the inside (as opposed to just editing news stories about it), and it has been interesting to discuss issues surrounding the site with people in the Tri-Cities and elsewhere (many of whom know little about it).
